Labs / The Field as a Soundscape. With Edoardo Marraffa.

Landscape is also a dimension to be heard. On Tuesday, July 8th, the Campo dei Giganti (Field of Giants) transformed into a collective resonance chamber for a workshop led by Edoardo Marraffa, a saxophonist and composer who has explored the territories of improvised and experimental music for over thirty years.

Marraffa’s presence was not merely a return, but a renewing ritual: having been part of the Field since its inauguration in 2022, the musician returned to inhabit these wounded lands to guide us through an experience of listening and relationship-building through sound.

The day began with a site-specific sound design workshop open to voices, woodwinds, strings, and sound objects, featuring 15 participants. Here, artistic practice became a pedagogy of listening: under Marraffa’s guidance, participants did not simply “play,” but explored the relationship between their own bodies and the landscape of olive trees affected by Xylella.

In a context where the silence of nature is often a sign of loss, sound became a tool for reappropriation. Instruments and bodies interrogated the space, seeking connections through collective improvisation and transforming the Field into a living score.

At 8:00 PM, the research process opened to the community. The public restitution was conceived as a profound dialogue between the earth and the community, demonstrating how the acoustic dimension can serve as the foundation for a new way of being a community: note by note, the musicians and performers built a sonic bridge capable of traversing trauma and transforming it into shared beauty.

This event was made possible thanks to the invaluable collaboration with Associazione Petrolio – Daniela Diurisi, a partnership we have renewed since the Field’s opening.

A special thanks goes to the plurality of voices and talents that gave substance to this magic: Francesca Chiellini; from the musicians of Sbandas to Marilina Caputo, Saverio Cannilla, Danilo Rafaschieri, Teresa Perna, Francesco Baffa, Pierfrancesco Garrisi, Gabriele Bruno, Lory Parente, Silvia de Paolis, Ivan Garrisi, Alberto Bollettieri, and Betta Maggi.
